It’s nearly tax time again, and the tax prep professionals at Boelman Shaw Capital Partners in Des Moines are here to help.  Start to get organized for tax season by marking your calendars with these important dates:

January 15, 2014:  If you owe federal estimated taxes, your final payment for tax year 2013 is due today.

January 31, 2014:  If you owe Iowa estimated taxes, your final payment for tax year 2013 is today.

If you owe federal estimated taxes and did not pay the final installment by the January 15 due date, you may avoid penalties for late payment by filing your federal tax return and paying any tax still due by this date.

W-2s must be made available to employees by this date.

January 28 - February 4, 2014:  This is when the IRS currently estimates the 2014 filing season will begin.  The start of the season has been delayed as a result of the government shutdown, and a firm start date will be announced in December 2013.

February 18, 2014:  If you claimed an exemption from withholding on your 2013 W-4, you must file a new W-4 by today in order to continue the exemption.

March 31, 2014:  This is the date by which most Americans will be required to be enrolled in a health care plan.  A fine for not being enrolled by this date will be reflected on 2014 tax returns.

April 15, 2014:  This is the deadline to file your 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ and pay any tax due.  You may file for an automatic 6-month extension using Form 4868.  An extension applies only to the due date of the return and does not extend the time you have to pay your tax obligation.

The first installment of federal estimated tax is due.

April 30, 2014:  This is the deadline for filing your State of Iowa tax return.  Iowa has no paper extension form, but if you pay 90% of the tax due, you may take until October 31 to file your return.  If less than 90% of tax due is paid on time, interest and penalties may apply.

The first installment of Iowa estimated tax is due.

June 15, 2014:  The second quarterly payment of federal estimated tax is due.
