Extension Notification

Clients with Refunds:

If you have historically received a refund for both state and federal, and you didn't experience a significant change in 2021, there is nothing you need to do or sign. We will file the appropriate form with the IRS and the due date of your return will automatically be extended to October 17th.

Clients with Balances Due:

If you have historically had a balance due on your tax return for state and/or federal taxes, these are still required to be paid by April 18th. Your preparer will contact you with an estimate of payment and provide you with further instructions.

This Year's Tax Process

COVID-19 has changed the way many of us go about our days, and life at Boelman Shaw is no exception. We have made the decision to provide drop-off tax preparation while allowing clients the chance to return to in-person appointments. Details of our updated 4 step process are as follows:


1 Drop off / Appointment

If you signed up for an in-person appointment we will reach out with your appointment date and time. Give us a call if you need to change the appointment. If you chose drop-off tax preparation we ask that you drop off your tax documents no later than March 15th to ensure the timely completion of your return.


2 Prepare Return

Your preparer may contact you with any questions they have once they receive your materials. Your preparer is very familiar with your tax return but we understand there may have been changes or unusual items to discuss. 


3 Review & Finalize

After a quality review, your preparer will contact you to finalize any remaining details.


4 Sign

Clients can choose to sign their return online with DocuSign or in person. We will e-mail you signature forms where you can type your name to submit signatures. 

As always, we cannot e-file your returns until all fees are paid.


SmartVault / Boelman Shaw Client Portal

We are still using SmartVault but we will be transitioning to the Boelman Shaw Tax Portal long term. You can still access your historical documents on SmartVault but we ask that clients upload current year documents to the new Boelman Shaw Tax Portal. The Boelman Shaw Tax Portal is integrated with our new tax software allowing us to complete your tax returns more efficiently. 



In the mail you received a large envelope with a checklist of items on the outside. This envelope is intended to assist you in organizing your tax documents. If you have not received one or lost it, we have extras at the Boelman Shaw office and you can grab one when you drop off your documents.
